Theory of phenomenological approach toward the Devine and
Light

Architecture and Design is an experience,unique
responsibility of an architect. The theory of phenomenology acknowledges these
responsibility by implementing sensory design in order to establish
experiential, architectural space. Phenomenology demonstrated in architecture
is the manipulation of space, material, and light and shadow to create a
memorable encounter through an impact on the human senses. The theory of
phenomelogy provides a completely different perspective towards architecture
and what architecture is to society. promoting the integration of sensory
perception as a function of a built form.

This creates an unique experience that is beyond tangible,
but rather abstract, observed and perceived. The analysis of this aesthetic and
interpretation of its qualitative elements and be seen by exploring case
studies by some phenomenological theorists such as Alberto Pérez-Gómez, Peter
Zumthor and Steven Holl, the is supportive evidence which highlight its
fundamental characteristics as a theory, in contrast to a more rationalist
design approach is needed. An observational argument to prioritize the human
experience in design can be determined by exploring both physical and
theoretical construct of phenomenology.

The sensory experience between an architectural object and

The following case study represents the implementation of
Light as phenomenology

Tadao ando – “In all my works, light is an important
controlling factor. I create enclosed spaces mainly by means of thick concrete
walls.  The primary reason is to create a
place for the individual, a zone for oneself within society. When the external
factors of a city’s environment require the wall to be without openings, the
interior must be especially full and satisfying.”

A question that’s plagued mankind for centuries – how would
one create an earthly structure worthy of the divine Should it be a lavish
building of rich materials and awe-inspiring stature, a grand gesture to the

the nature and soul of architecture. The creation of a situation is to
enlighten people and enable them to understand the potential meaning, revealing
a state of awareness. Tadao Ando enables people to relate to his emotional
design situation that reflects the Zen state of mind inherent in traditional
Japanese culture, which is characterized as being quiet, distant, clear.poetic
Ando’s most famous Christian buildings are without doubt the Church on the
Water in Tomamu (1988) and the Church of the Light in Ibaraki near Osaka
(1989). Both chapels are extraordinary ,statements about the ineffable that
breaks into our world. Even photographs cannot restrain the fact that these
buildings effectively make room for the ineffable. This is architecture at its

Tadao Ando, combines the energy of a symbolic space with
light, relying on just one.

Tadao Ando’s Church of the Light is minimalist and reductive
design representing the religious paraphernalia in a simple cruciform
extrusion, which is often criticized as disturbingly empty, void, and
undefined. Although it has been stated to be nothing more than six walls and a
roof, there is a whole level of design aesthetic implemented by Ando and his
craftsmen that is misread and unrecognized by the occupants. As a modern,
minimalist structure the Church of the Light emits an architectural purity that
is completely reforms human perception as how architecture and Light combine in
details Spaces. Everything in the design is stripped naked to highlight a fund
with a wall of vertical and horizontal opening forming a cross of light that
fills the space. These opening were designed to not only for the light to enter
but also air in, but were subsequently closed due to inclement weather. Materials/construction

The building, constructed in particular, has left the entire
surface of the ornament for giving spiritual light, becoming more intense as
the sacrum. Even the seats (which were made with parts of the Scaffold used for
construction of the church and covered with black paint), say its austere and
minimal. This building is a replacement for existing wooden structure With a
minimal budget, the design stuck to a simple no frills, just the basics, soil,
walls, ceiling and openings for light and the light fantastic treatment that
owes its charm and its name. Located in a hidden corner in a quiet residential
suburb in Ibaraki, Osaka, in September this small includes two small buildings,
arranged at an angle, aiming to agree the road of urbanization plot. The set
consists of two volumes (the church and a Sunday school) placed at an angle
consistent with the urban environment. The whole arrival is indirect and
reflects Andos architectural language, as it requires to enter a side road
through which you reach a small square from where the hits are distributed to
the two buildings. Both consist of rectangular blocks of concrete. The main
Church of Light, is a box of 6 x 6 x 18 crossed by a wall at an angle of 15
which energizes the space because, being separate from the cover that allows
light to filter inside creating the impression of a floating roof. The diagonal
wall contains the glass entrance door, which slides horizontally.

The seams and joints of the concrete are built with
precisions, and crafted by the master Japanese carpenters, along with Ando,
worked together to create an immensely aesthetic concrete ,So much so, that the
seams of the concrete formwork align perfectly with the crosses extrusion on
the east side of the church Summary

To sum up I find that there is the continuity in the
response of light in this Project. Although the design logic, skill and further
meaning beyond the design is changing and developing among them based on
different special design limitations, light is always the unchangeable point
which Ando follows and utilizes among these works. I think this is the main
reason why I always admire his works and prefer to learn the skill of designing
light from him.
