Eating disorders are commonly known as people who do not eat, or people who eat too much and throw it all up. These are examples of patterns that lead to poor physical and psychological health. Binge eaters follow the practice of overeating, followed by forced vomiting. Sometime, eating disorders may be the cause of a persons weight being at least 15% below average for their age, sex and height. Eating disorders also lead to heart disorders. Heart disorders are the most common cause of death for people with this disease. This is due to the fact that anorexia creates dangerous heart rhythms. Bulimia has a killer factor as well. The reason being is that bulimia leads to what is most commonly understood as an electrolyte imbalance. When puking and purging lowers your sodium levels and throws your body out of balance. Your body will go into over drive and can cause you a seriously fatal heart attack. Some symptoms of bulimia include eating to the point of discomfort in your stomach, self-forced vomiting, and lastly, surprisingly, laxative use. 
Did you know that people in society today can take part in online chats where you can compared weights with matched online users, helping each other binge and avoid eating? If you search the hashtags #thinspogram or #bonespo, photos will show up of bone-skinny people with captions like “Pretty girls don’t eat”. Users of all social media platforms help each other’s damaging behaviour and to promote the disease. Another fact, is most people with eating disorders believe that it is a lifestyle choice, not a serious mental illness. Eating disorders can also be genetic. Eating disorders have a higher death rate of any other psychiatric illness. Actually, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, anorexia has a death rate 12 times higher than any other cause of death in women ages 15 to 24. 
However, we live in a society that eating disorders are accepted because of the messages we’re exposed to. Social media amplifies that exposure. Social media provokes behaviours associated with eating disorders. This includes the obsessions and fascination with these such diseases allowing comparisons by supporting each others images with the realization of how easy it is to find and receive approval of your eating disorder. Some social media users even come to support each other through monthly challenges like setting limits on calorie intake and watching each others habits. Through some investigation, while searching the hashtags listed above, I found  some Instagram account that was posting such as “1 like = 2 hours of fasting”. Disgusting. Linking to modern society and western culture at large, the world is changing with support by a click of a button of your eating disorder. Before social media, you would keep it private and base your appearances from magazine advertisement, and maybe, even talk about your disorder with a classmate. Now, it is hidden, and no one around you might even catch on to your problem; unless of course you are skinner all of a sudden. Now you can log on and see what hundreds and thousands of people are doing. It is important to be well aware of the dangers media platforms that shape our society, especially when they allow photos that promote thinness. A great approach would be to encourage one another to stay away from social media, but this is of course inevitable. Although, we should at least try to use the Internet in safer ways. I believe that the more time teenage girls spend on such media platforms, the higher the risk of developing negative body images.

Instagram banned certain hashtags and implemented new guidelines against images and accounts that promote this. The challenge for us is to make sure to keep on top of the new content created everyday. Sadly, people and groups that promote eating disorders, will find and create other hashtags as ways to share information. Social media people are beginning to share their own photos of their before and after pictures to show their personal battle histories of their eating disorders. Photos of recovery on social media, using hashtags like #foodisfuel. Messages of recoveries are very important to share. Research shows disorders run in families.  A relative or a close loved one of a person with an eating disorder is more likely to have the illness than someone without a family history of disorders. Mothers with eating disorders and/or body image problems impacts their own children because  they do not know what constitutes normal eating. Linking to this, a mother with a child with an eating disorder will feel like she is to blame which causes stress on families. 
Fortunately, treatments for eating disorders are available. Although the pain of having to come forward to admit such a touchy-subject illness might be tough for you and the family. What needs to be comprehended is that treatment can be timely and involves lots of family commitment and understanding. The quicker your family or close ones catches your illness, the quicker you will be cured. There are lots and lots of groups that help families struggling with the issue. They are helpful because eating  disorders are increasingly prevalent in females, and increasing statics that include males and in every age.  Finally, knowing that you can find the proper guidance and treatment for eating disorders is absolutely necessary.
