She shows that Gertrude quickly moved to another marriage to Claudius after the death of King Hamlet and has committed adultery. Ophelia also thinks that Hamlet only used her for her body. Which Hamlet’s not the only one who defines Ophelia by her sexuality. Even her brother has something to say about it. In Act I, Laertes dispenses advice to Ophelia on the pitfalls of pre-marital sex.The problem with her being too obedient is that you can’t fight back which makes it hard to gain control in a relationship. Having that Gertrude committed adultery, alludes to the weakness women have in needing to be loved.Ophelia being mad is able to show the corruption people possess. Ophelia offers her brother a fennel, which she is proving that Laertes is deceitful. It’s shown when he warns Ophelia of Hamlet’s intentions to be with her. Again, In Act I, Laertes gives advice to Ophelia on the pitfalls of pre-marital sex. King Claudius is also corrupted as He murdered his brother, stole his brother’s wife, and usurped his brother’s throne. The appearance of madness that Ophelia possess’ allows her to show the true nature of tragedy. As she is heart broken with Hamlet it creates an insanity for her, as Hamlet killed her own father.Ophelia also mocks Claudius’ actions of killing his father and that he must repent even though that it was hamlet that commited the action of the murder. Claudius started this whole tragedy in the first place. If he had not poison his own brother, Gertrude wouldn’t have been married to Claudius, and The ghost of Hamlet wouldn’t drive hamlet to insanity to avenge.Overall, the appearance of madness that Ophelia shows/ possess is due to the actions of Hamlet. Hamlet later becoming insane after the death of Ophelia. Ophelia uses her madness to expose the true nature of the people in Hamlet. Which later in the end of the story, the main characters die from poison.
