Jeremiah is working as a manager at Delights Restaurant, one of the chain restaurants that have reputation for having excellent food and dedicated employees located in Washington. Unfortunately he has encounter problem with his employees in the restaurant which cause the flow of customer began slipping and reflected his bonus. In Jeremiah case, the employee’s are poor of self esteem. They are not respecting each other, the cook treated the waiter or waitress with a little respect and the employees often were impolite to customers and kept them waiting while they are talking at the back.
Self-esteem is a basic human need or motivation. American psychologist Abraham Maslow, for example, included self-esteem in his hierarchy of needs. He described two different forms of esteem: the need for respect from others and the need for self-respect, or inner self-esteem. Respect from others involve recognition, acceptance, status, and appreciation, and was believed to be more fragile and easily lost than inner self-esteem. According to Maslow, without the fulfillment of the self-esteem need, individuals will be driven to seek it and unable to grow and obtain self-actualization.
They are two groups among the staff in the restaurant, i. e. the cook and the staff. This can be seen when the incorrect orders should go back to the kitchen, but the wait staff often told the customer that the cooks will complained if orders came back. We can see here that the staffs are not communicating well with the cook. It also shows the wait staff did not respect and treat the customer well. In conclusion, Jeremiah needs to motivate his employees. Motivation is the inner power or energy that pushes toward acting, performing actions and achieving.
It has much to do with desire and ambition, and if they are absent, motivation is absent too. Motivation strengthens the ambition, increases initiative and gives direction, courage, energy and the persistence to follow one’s goals. A motivated person takes action and does whatever it needs to achieve his/her goals. The importance of self-esteem lies in the fact that it concerns to ourselves, the way we are and the sense of our personal value. Thus, it affects the way we are and act in the world and the way we are related to everybody else.
Nothing in the way we think, feel, decide and act escapes the influence of self-esteem. By virtue of this reason, even the most evil human beings deserve respect and considered treatment. This attitude, nonetheless, does not pretend to come into conflict with mechanisms that society has at its disposition to prevent individuals from causing hurt —of any type— to others. Motivation is one of the most important keys to success. When there is lack of motivation you either get no results, or only ordinary results, whereas when there is motivation you attain greater and better results and achievements.
Compare a student who lacks motivation and who hardly studies, to a student who is highly motivated, and who devotes many hours to his studies; they will get absolutely different grades. Lack of motivation also shows lack of enthusiasm, zest and ambition, whereas the possession of motivation is a sign of strong desire, energy and enthusiasm, and the willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve what one sets out to do. A motivated person is a happier person, more energetic, and sees the positive end result in his/her mind.
