Introduction
to the Study

Chapter 1 is composed of four parts:
(1) Background, (2) Statement of the Problem, (3) Significance of the Study,
(4) Definition of Terms, and (5) Scope and Delimitation.

First part, Background of the Study,
gives an overview regarding the study.

Second part, Statement of the Problem,
presents the general and the specific problems of the study.

            Third
part, Significance of the Study, discusses how the study can benefit certain
groups of people.

            Fourth
part, Definition of Terms, define the operational and conceptual definition of
terms used in the study.

            Fifth
part, Scope and Delimitation of the Study, shows the coverage of the study.

Background of
the Study

Churches do exist before, in today’s
generation, and will still exist in the future. In every kind of religion and
churches, it is a must and it is important that its believers or members will
gather together for a corporate worship or prayer service in a certain period
of time and in a certain. Churches do exist for special and bigger purposes.
Some of those purposes are, people will receive salvation, people will grow not
just in the spiritual aspect of their lives but also in other aspects, and
people will have guidance for their everyday living. A church is a place where
religious rituals are being practiced such as worshipping, praying, as well as
a place to learn something new and important for one’s living.

The common problem of many churches
around the globe in today’s generation is the decreasing number of people who
faithfully attend church activities and services. People nowadays prefer to do
other things than going to church even just once a week. Philippines, even
though it is known as a Christian nation, still the same problem arises among
different churches.

            1 Corinthians 12:12-13 12 Just
as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one
body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized bya one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or
Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

, Apostle Paul likened the church as one
body. Each member of it has a specific and special part or role, and it doesn’t
matter if one has a small or big part. The important thing is that, everyone is
doing his or her job. A church is interdependent with and each other and are
united as one. If a part of it was lost, it has a possibility to be damaged and
if one suffers, the whole body is also suffering it.

            There
is no perfect person and so, a church, it has a positive and negative sides.
Even though there are many benefits a person can get in attending church
activities and services, the number of people attending is lessening as time
goes by. Due to the decreasing church attendance,, this study aimed to know the
reasons and the factors that causes it.

Statement of
the Problem

This study aims to know the factors on
why people do not go to church for a various time. Particularly, this study
intended to answer these questions:

1.
What
is a church?

2.
What
is the purpose of the church?

3.
Why
is it important to go to church?

4.
What
keeps people from not going to church?

5.
What
are the effects to people’s lives of not being able to go to church?

6.
What
are the possible ways to help people become faithful with their churches?

Significance

            The
study will benefit the participants themselves, church leaders, its members,
and people who do not go to church anymore.

            Participants
themselves will understand the real significance of attending church activities
at least once a week. It can help them assess themselves in some areas of their
lives.

            Church
leaders and their members will obtain knowledge and clear understanding
concerning the reasons behind the inactive participation of their members. They
will be able to find means and ways on how to help those individuals who don’t
go to church any longer.

            People
who don’t go to church anymore will realize the importance of going to church and
having a fellowship with their fellow members or believers. This study will
help them feel welcome with their churches once again.
