“Be the change you wish to see in the world” – Mahatma Gandhi
Mohandas Gandhi was born in the late 1800s in India to a religious family where he grew up aspiring to study law. Better known to his followers as Mahatma, which in his culture was defined as high minded, wise, and selfless (Webster, 2018, p. 1). Mahatma Gandhi was a well-known Indian activist fighting against the discrimination and British rule of India. Gandhi was considered to be the father of India and accomplished political and social progress through non-violent protests across the country (Nanda, 2017, p. 1).
It is known that this quote was said during Gandhi’s campaign against the Transvaal government after an ordinance was passed regarding the Indian populations registration (History.com staff, 2010, para. 4). Although the quote is just a summary of Ghandi’s statement that has evolved over the years, it is believed to be a more concise saying. It is believed that Arleen Lorrance should be given credit for this passage due to her deconstruction of the original words said by Gandhi himself (Q.I, 2017, para. 1-12). This quote means that you shouldn’t sit back and think about the problems in the world just hoping someone will come along and fix them. This quote is conveying that you need to step forward and be the change that you see the world is in need of. If there is a problem going on in the world that you think needs to be addressed, then you should be the person that is in the mindset of finding a solution to the problem. Chances are, this is a mutual thought among thousands of people, and if everyone gets in the mindset of being the change they want to see in the world then you could take down that problem all together. On a smaller scale this quote can apply to our everyday lives. Each day is a new day and we are different every day, every person has demons inside them we need to fight in order to be pure. No one will ever be perfect but aspiring to have a personality geared towards changing the world can make you a better moral citizen of this world. I chose this quote because to me it describes how I motivate myself on a daily basis to be nice people and bring out the positive in every situation. When I think of saying something disrespectful or doing something I shouldn’t, even as little as speeding, I remember this quote. I think how my attitude can change how someone perceives me and how it can change their day or their attitude towards doing the wrong thing as well. The way you demonstrate yourself towards others can affect how their day goes and even determine their happiness. If you want others to adopt the same attitude for changing the world then you need to lead by example.
Quotes can define our everyday lives and create a foundation for our actions and how we treat others. The quote “be the change you wish to see in the world” is a statement to congregate the people of the world in a positive attitude to change the world. When Gandhi said this he was sending a message to everyone to get them to reflect on the problems in the world, and to come up with a solution one step at a time.
